Becoming an AYSO Volunteer
AYSO is a volunteer-run organization. Coaches, referees, team parents, and field maintenance crews are all volunteers. Our volunteer foundation helps ensure that the focus remains fixed on what's good for our young players. AYSO wouldn't exist without volunteers.
AYSO offers training to help volunteers who may have little or no soccer experience quickly gain the age-appropriate knowledge and skills they need to become effective coaches and referees. It only takes a few hours to become qualified as an introductory-level coach or referee.
There are several steps necessary to become an AYSO volunteer within the state of Pennsylvania. Please contact us if you have any questions about volunteering.
Step 1 - Register online with Lewisburg AYSO
Everyone involved with Lewisburg AYSO (parents or volunteers) need to register with Blue Sombrero. If you are a volunteer that has already registered your children just log into the Stack Sports registration portal with your existing logon information. Guardians are also able to submit their volunteer application during the player registration process.
To complete the volunteer form, click the volunteer button to the left of the browser window, then click the by Find Volunteer Roles button at the top of the screen. Select the program year and then click the View Roles button. Select the appropriate role and complete the form as directed.
All volunteers must be approved by the registrar before they can take the required trainings in Step 4.
Step 2 - Complete the required Pennsylvania clearances
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires all individuals working directly with children to complete a Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History Report and a Pennsylvania Department of Child Welfare Service's Child Abuse Report. Both of these clearances are free for volunteers and are valid for five years.
Volunteers that have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must complete an FBI Criminal History Report through IdentoGo. To complete the process:
- Visit the IdentoGo website
- Select Pennsylvania
- Select Digital Fingerprinting
- The service code is 1KG6ZJ
Click here for more information on the FBI background check process. The initial fee is $27.50, but Lewisburg AYSO will reimburse volunteers for this FBI history report fee. Please contact us for additional information related to FBI background checks.
For more information on PA clearances please read the DHS FAQ.
Step 3 - Send your clearances to AYSO National
Email a PDF copy of your clearances to email@example.com for a faster processing time. Alternatively you may fax a copy to 310-525-1156. Please inform the CVPA that you have submitted your clearances so we can track the approval process.
Step 4 - Complete the required trainings at aysou.org
The logon information for AYSOU is the same as Blue Sombrero.
All volunteers must take the Safe Haven course. Additional trainings are required for coaches and referees, many of which are offered online. Please note that it may take up to 24 hours for a volunteer's eAYSO transcript to populate within AYSOU.
Beginning in 2017 new coaches will be required to complete a field component which will help volunteers provide the best experience possible for their children. The Lewisburg AYSO coach trainer and both coach coordinators will help volunteers through this process. Please contact us for more information.
